Indian Head Massage

Information

Indian Head Massage is based on the Ayurvedic system of healing which has been practiced in India for over a thousand years.  It’s a relaxing holistic treatment that uses massage to release stress that has accumulated in the tissues, muscles and joints of the head, face, neck and shoulders. It aims to rebalance your body’s energies, quieten the mind and bring an overall sense of peace. A treatment will usually last approximately forty-five minutes with some quiet time and after care discussion following.

The techniques used within Indian Head Massage are as follows:

  • Effleurage – a stroking movement; warming tissues and spreading massage medium.
  • Petrissage – a deeper movement, pressing and lifting tissue, warming muscles and improving blood flow
  • Tapotement – breaking and making contact with the tissue which stimulates muscle fibres and increases blood any lymph circulation.
  • Friction – a stationary rubbing movement which breaks tension nodules and adhesions
  • Vibration – a tremor to the skin which releases tension

A few of the many benefits of Indian Head Massage include that it:

  • Nourishes tissues and encourages healing through increased blood flow
  • Improves the circulation of nutrients and oxygen through increased blood flow
  • Relieves muscular tension and fatigue through the relaxation of the muscle and nerve fibres
  • Increases flexibility from the relaxation of the muscle and nerve fibres
  • Improves posture through the relaxation of the muscle and nerve fibres
  • Aids the elimination of toxins through the increased lymphatic flow
  • Stimulates immunity through the increased lymphatic flow

There are many infections, viruses and diseases that are contraindications to having an Indian Head Massage treatment.  It is important to establish that the client doesn’t suffer with any of these prior to commencing treatment, and if they do and treatment needs to be restricted then this will need to be accommodated.  If you would like an Indian Head Message but think you may have a contraindication for this (e.g. ringworm, impetigo or a severe skin condition) then please don’t hesitate to get in contact and we will discuss it.
